While we all want our bedding to reflect our personal style, there are other factors to consider while shopping for bedding. Consider this: Most people spend nearly a third of their lives asleep. The bed linens you sleep in stay next to your skin for up to eight hours at a time. That is longer than we wear most clothing. Another interesting fact is when you sleep, you perspire and breath about 2 pounds of moisture and microbes that can grow germs, dust mites, and molds. Here are some helpful hints for you to have not only a stylish but a healthy bed.
Considering the amount of time you spend in your sheets make sure that you choose a type that is skin-friendly. The best fabrics that you can use are the natural ones, these will draw the moisture away from your body and will dry quickly. Check for bedding that are made of cotton, silk, linen, or a mixture of these fabrics.
Cotton is the most popular of these choices mostly due to the fact that they are the easiest to care for, for their long durability, and because they are largely less expensive than the other choices. One of the most popular cottons is the pima or Egyptian cotton.
Silk has been used by the Chinese for thousands of years and has quickly gained popularity for bedding use. Not only is silk bedding very comfortable but silk is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, making it a good alternative to down for those with allergies.
The most important part of healthy bedding is the proper care once you get your new bedding home. Everyone especially those of you who have a lot of allergies or are chemically sensitive should wash their new sheets before they are put on the bed. After you have started using them it is even more important to wash your bedding frequently, about once a week for sheets. To kill dust mites sheets should be laundered in hot water so it is best to purchase sheets that can stand up to the washings.
By keeping these things in mind while making your bedding choices you can make sure that your bed will not only be stylish but can also be a place in which you can get a healthy sleep.
