What is a dust ruffle?

A dust ruffle or bed skirt is a decorative covering that is placed under a mattress and hangs to the floor. It not only hides the under workings of your bed but also gives the entire bed a finished look. Dust ruffles come in two sizes or ‘drops’. There is the standard 14″ drop or the longer 18″. To find out which size would best suit your bed, simply measure from the top of the box spring to the floor.
There are two standard styles of dust ruffle. The first option is the classic shirred or ruffled style. The second option, which is becoming more popular, is the tailored style which uses split corners to create a straight line right to the floor.

Should a dust ruffle touch the floor or should you leave a gap between the floor and the dust ruffle? Thank you!

Hi Ellen,
It is really just a matter of taste. A standard dust ruffle is generally 14″ from most manufacturers. A dust ruffle of this length will not touch the floor unless you have a bed that is unusually low. If you prefer a dust ruffle that will go to the floor, or if you have a bed that is very high, look for an 18″ dust ruffle. Many manufacturers now offer this length as an alternative to the standard 14″ length.
